Press release
Luis Adelantado is pleased to present Aproximación a la pintura desde Jusep Torres Campalans, exhibition by Misha Bies Golas in our Boiler Room. The exhibition revolves around the conception of painting itself, and is articulated on the basic issues the author has to face. These issues are mainly: what to paint about, and why paint.
Starting from these basic premises—linked to intentionality and the nature of painting—, Misha draws on the reading of the work of Max Aub which lends its name to the title of the exhibition—Jusep Torres Campalans—as well as his personal archive, from which he rescues a history of graphic materials.
The installation consists of a series of documents, posters and leaflets that allude to the exhibitional scope. The materials were compiled by the artist for years and on this occasion have been used as a base.
The layers that make up the installation show a series of texts from the green notebook which appears in Max Aub’s novel. In this enigmatic notebook attributed to the painter Jusep Torres Campalans—a literary creation of Aub’s, which crosses the borders of literature towards reality—several reflections and aphorisms are gathered with regard to painting and life in relation to art. Many of them are distinctly ironic, bordering on the surreal. Misha rescues these aphorisms and brings them to light in this exhibition, in which many exhibitions take place at once.
